CBS Ballot Proposition 1
On October 7, 2025, Sitka voters will consider a ballot proposition that asks whether future city funds should be directed toward recreation and athletic infrastructure. Recently approved unanimously by the Sitka Assembly, this proposition will not increase taxes—it simply redirects existing funds as current financial obligations decrease.
While a “Yes” vote will not necessarily fund SCORE’s proposed projects, and it may be many years before these funds become available, we still encourage community members to vote “Yes.” A “Yes” vote on Ballot Proposition 1 accomplishes the following:
-
Helps to meet the intended purpose of the tobacco taxes, which were originally intended to mitigate the health impacts of tobacco use.
-
Signals that Sitkans value and support investments in outdoor recreation.
-
Strengthens our ability to pursue funding from private donors, state and local governments, and grant agencies.
-
Helps build momentum for all recreation projects by showing that the community is invested in its infrastructure.
-
Our specific project may ultimately benefit from direct funding made available through this measure, depending on how priorities are set in the future.
-
This measure would establish a growing, long-term funding source that can continue to support a wide range of recreation and athletic projects for years to come.
